If your AC is malfunctioning and you have already attempted basic troubleshooting steps without pinpointing the issue, you have likely contacted an HVAC professional. In the interim, waiting for the technician’s arrival can be hot and uncomfortable. So, what can you do to stay somewhat cool?

The good news is that at Gahanna Furnace & Air Conditioning, we offer 24-hour emergency services. This means that 7 days a week, 365 days a year, we are committed to providing exceptional customer service around the clock. In the event of an emergency, please be assured that we will come to your aid as promptly as possible.

Here are some practical tips and solutions to help you and your family stay cooler while awaiting your technician’s arrival.

How to Stay Cool When Your AC Is Broken:

  • Set your ceiling fans to spin counterclockwise
  • Close all your window treatments and blinds
  • Try to keep exterior doors shut
  • Open your windows at night
  • Avoid using heat-inducing appliances
  • Create your own temporary “AC”

Set Your Ceiling Fans to Spin Counterclockwise

Generally, ceiling fans are set to rotate clockwise, which helps send cool air downward. This can be really handy! However, if your air conditioner breaks, try switching your ceiling fans to rotate counterclockwise for a nice breeze.

Why is that? Well, by doing so, the counterclockwise direction of the blades will pull up the air in your room, where it can be caught and dispersed, making it feel a bit cooler. If you’re unsure where the switch on your ceiling fan is to change the blade direction, try checking the base of the ceiling fan. Usually, there’s a switch strategically placed there. By pressing this switch, you should be able to easily change the blade’s rotation direction.

Close all Your Window Treatments and Blinds

While sunlight peeping through your home can be refreshing, it’s not ideal if your air conditioner is acting up. Try closing your blinds or drawing your curtains to keep things cool. Make sure to do this for every window in your home!

While we’re on the topic, it’s also a good idea to close any open windows. We know creating a cross-breeze might seem like a smart move, but during the day, it doesn’t do much to keep the warm air OUT of your house.

Try to Keep Exterior Doors Shut

Similarly, try to keep the exterior doors of your home closed as much as possible. This includes the front door, back door, basement doors leading outside, and the garage door. It might seem a bit tricky, but by avoiding opening these doors, you can significantly reduce the chances of warm air sneaking into your home.

Open Your Windows at Night

At night, you can open your windows thanks to the natural drop in outdoor temps. The cooler evening air can bring extra relief and make your home feel more comfortable. Just remember, if you open the windows at night, be sure to close them again in the morning.

Avoid Using Heat-inducing Appliances

Next, try to avoid using large household appliances that generate heat, as they can make your home even warmer. These include (but aren’t limited to):

  • Oven
  • Stove
  • Dryer
  • Dishwasher

Create Your Own Temporary “AC”

We know this last suggestion might be a bit “creative,” but it can be helpful if you’re really hot. As they say, “Desperate times call for desperate measures!”

Did you know you can make your own personal “AC” with just two simple materials? All you need is ice and an electric fan! It might sound funny, but it actually works. Just gather some ice in a large bowl or container, place it right in front of the fan, and turn the fan on.

This makeshift AC works by having the fan blow warm air onto the ice, cooling it down and creating a refreshing breeze that provides a bit of cool relief. With this solution, you can kick your feet up and let us handle the hard work!

These tips and solutions can help you stay cool while waiting for your AC to be fixed.
